Perth City Heritage Fund

Regeneration Through Conservation

Following the restoration of city status to Perth in 2012, Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust has been encouraging the regeneration of Perth's historic buildings through the Perth City Heritage Fund (PCHF), a scheme funded by the Scottish Government regeneration strategy for cities through Historic Environment Scotland. PCHF’s aim is to foster economic regeneration by grant-assisting owners of historic buildings within the Perth Central and Kinnoull Conservation Areas with the costs of high quality repairs to their homes using traditional materials and best conservation practice.

The Perth City Heritage Fund is now in its third term thanks to a new phase of funding from Historic Environment Scotland, beginning in 2018 and ending in 2021. Phase 3 will target comprehensive repairs to historic tenements in multiple ownership; repairs to historic buildings used or owned by local charities; and unused or under-used historic buildings to bring them back into use.

The PCHF story so far

The first phase of Perth City Heritage Fund ran from 2012-2015 providing grant assistance to 22 projects. To date, a further 26 projects have been completed through tranche 2, investing over £2 million in the conservation and repair of Perth's historic buildings.

The first two phases of the PCHF ran between 2012-2015 and 2015-2018 and provided £1.1m of grant assistance to 48 projects, drawing in a total investment of over £2.5 million to the conservation and repair of Perth's historic buildings. These phases targeted projects with the greatest economic benefit to Perth's historic environment and included empty, under-used or dilapidated buildings in particular. Demand for the scheme has been so high that both phases were fully subscribed.

Since 2012, PCHF has:-

  • Assisted in bringing 38 units of substandard accommodation back into an acceptable condition;
  • Encouraged the formation of 9 owners' associations;
  • Assisted 7 charities with repairs and improvements to their properties;
  • Brought 817 square metres of long term vacant floor space into commercial use;
  • Refurbished or reinstated 328 sash and case windows;
  • Repaired or reinstated 10 historic shop fronts.
